Summer Learning Journey – Octopus Oddities ( Step It Up )

In this activity we were tasked to inform others of octopuses and fun facts about them, but in the form of a poster !

In this activity what I have learnt and taken in is that Maori Octopuses ( Marcoctopus Maorum ) have this unique hunting technique called Parachute hunting meaning they would jet towards the prey, then using its very long tentacles  to wrap around it then using its powerful sucker to make sure the prey has no chance of esacpe !

Maori Octopuses are unique beauties can averaging 1 meter in height, but unfortunatley we still havent found out the lifespan of these maginifcient creatures. Yet, what we have found out that they live in the reefs near Austrailia, and New Zealand ranging from 0 meters high in the coral reefs, to the deep ocean floor 549 meters.

They ate large crabs,  crayfish, abanole ( paua ), mussels, and even other octopuses, all off from the coastal floors. Yet, they have many predators that include; seals, sharks, octopuses, and albatrosses.

This is what I learnt overall from this busy activity, I found it really enjoyable to find out what lies beyond my reefs and waters, besides the Taniwha in Aotearoas rivers, not to mention all the kina and paua we have, so I am very grateful and how blessed we are in New Zealand!

Summer Learning Journey – Octopus Oddities ( Kickstart )

Our assignment for today’s Summer Learning Journey project was to choose an octopus, color it online, or print it out using markers and coloring pencils.used thecolor.com to color this online.choose dumbo octopus because it’s one of my favorite varieties and believe they’re cool.discovered that octopuses only live for three to five years, that they inhabit the deep sea floor, and that each octopus has nine brains and three hearts!Since octopi is my favorite sea animal, thoroughly enjoyed this project.

Summer Learning Journey – Legs Legs Legs? ( Kickstart )

For this activity we designed our own creation of moshas special leg, and for my creaation I came up with the idea of doing a yellow themed cartoon leg, that includes Spongebob from Bikini Bottom , Jake the Dog from Adventure Time, the Lorax and many more.

This activity was a heartbreaking journey learning that such an unfortunate animal, at just 7 months old had stepped on a thailandian mine, just off the borders where her home was. Then doing a life saving surgery, to save her. Everyone thought that Mosha wasn’t going to survive due to her state, but then ultimately proving them wrong by performing a miracle that noone thought was possible.

Even though this was such a fun activity, it was also a activity to be aware of what can happen in life, but then also being a reminder that anything is possible if you believe enough !

Summer Learning Journey – Legs Tally ( Kickstart )

For this activity I had to show my math knowledge by using all of the basic operations knowledge and then making my own word problem, proving my understanding of the questions provided also ! How I worked out the question in the purple box, is that I do 5 divided by 100 then multiplicate it by 1 equaling 2o !

Summer Learning Journey – Art in the Web ( Step it Up )

For this task we were handed the assignment to carry on our learning about spiderwebs, and their unique talents and specialities. Using an A4 paper and folding it multiple times before finally drawing out the shape, using scissors to carefully cut it out, into your last final piece. Unfortunately, I did not do the second task which was to use a toilet paper roll to make a spider, although it did look very cool to do!

I learnt that many spiders use different patterns to create their homes, and some of the new things I have learnt and taken in is that, spiders can create a tunnel web, and nets. Making them natures artist !

They also know what lines to step on so that they don’t get stuck in their own traps, and some scientists also suspect that the spiders use zigzags, to warn off the birds to tell them to stop.

Another fun fact I’ve learnt was that they reuse their old silk by eating it up and recycling it through their digestive systems !

Summer Learning Journey – Art in the Web

For this weeks topic on Summer Learning Journey it is Lots Of Legs, and for the first activity with this topic, we have been given a fun and artistic activity to draw a spider web,  but before we could do this we watched a cool and informative video about Spider Webs. It talked about how spiders produced silk and how it is thinner than a strand of hair !

Spider use different types of silk, ofr many different reasons. One is the sticky type of silk, which is used to catch prey, making them stick onto the trap, ultimately letting the spiders to have an easy meal ! Another is a fluffy type where, when the spiders lay there eggs, they gently wrap the fluufy silk around the eggs. Making a protective shield for the future spider generation. Finally they use another type of silk, to creatwe their homes!

After all of this discovering we could finally design/draw our own beautiful spider web using our imagination! We used a pencil and a peice of paper to draw our own spider webs. Some of us used the video given to us if we didn’t know how to drawy this magnificient wonder in life, many others used our smart searching skills to search for inspiration before drawing it!

I enjoyed this activity because not only did let our brains consume more and more knowledge, about things that probably noone knew, but we did it in an artisitic type of way, which in Art I generally enjoy everything about it !
