Matariki

  • LI: Explain how the rising of Matariki signaled a time of celebration, reflection, and preparation.
  • LI: Create a piece of work that expresses their understanding of the significance of the Matariki stars.

For reading we had been assorted the activity to create a presentation about the meaning of matariki and also been given some activities to the Matariki Presentation that we had to presentate to the classroom. I also learnt that there were loads of birds that had been associated with the rising of Matariki with one of the birds being a kereru, having its own constellation just above the famous orion’s belt, this kereru in the stars does symbolises bringing new begginings, and that Maori people always used to hunt this specific species of bird because it had always been drunk from eating to much food ! I loved learning about the maori celebration because we had been embracing New Zealands indiginous culture which not many people in the world know about !

Volcano Poem

LI: To write a multi verse cinquain poem that describes the journey of a sleeping maunga that erupts

For more our learning linking into Inquiry we have been taught what cinquain poems are . What is a conquain poem? A cinquain poem has 5 lines and in these 5 lines each and everyone of them has a different purpose, the first line which is the top line always has to be a noun which is a name or something you can touch. Line 2 needs 2 adjectives and only 2 adjectives that describe the word in the first line which should be a noun. The middle line has to have 3 verbs that most typically end in a ‘ing’ but can also end with a ‘ly’ too, these words are supposed to describe what your noun does and what are there most common actions that they do. Line 4 is a noun phrase which is a group of words (not a sentence) that go together to describe the noun, and last but not least we have Line 5 this line is a synonym, to the first line, synonym is a word with a similar meaning to the noun! This was a cool way to adventure into our topic in a different way, with what is not normal on a regular basis !

Impact of Volcanoes

LI: To discuss the impact of volcanoes on the environment and human communities.

Our challenge was to research the impact of a specific volcanic eruption in Aotearoa. We could choose from Mt Tarawera or Whakaari and I chose Whakaari , by choosing this volcano I had found that not only it caused insufferable damage to lives and familys, with also 22 unfortunate souls being lost in the chaos, there had also been damages been caused to the surrounding area with it affecting the marine environment, the air quality and shutting the tourism industry for touring around the island. Researching this was fun and it was also a friendly reminder that life is more complicated than cupcakes, butterflies and rainbows.

Highest Common Factor

LI : How to identify highest common factors

For maths, we had been learning how to identify the highest common factors between two numbers using our multiplication skills ( Calculator ) . What we also learnt from learning the highest common factors, was how to do prime factorisation, for e.g ; the prime factorisation for 16 would be 2x2x2x2 becausee 2 is a prime number, and when multiplied 4 times it equals 16 ! I liked to do the HCF and fount it cool to learn.

Data Analysis

In Math, we learnt how to use the data given to us and put it into a bar graph. For the data we had been given the topic of why people of ls2 are absent  , with ls2 being the ones who decide why and what were the reasons being. This is my DLO I put together and I liked working on it with my group !

Why Maungarei Sleeps : Pourquoi Story

It is said that long ago there lived a moody teenaged-girl that stood over the Tamaki River and they called her ‘ Fire of a Volcano ‘ ( Her real name was Maungarei ).  Many, many people found her personality to have a sort of unhinging vibe towards her when first meeting the envious-brat. Not only that she had no sportsmanship whatsoever making her the perfect daughter to have if you wanted to go bankrupt or make you lonely. She was an absolute dunce not to mention nobody wanted to know her or even exist in the same world as her ! But on this particular day there she had finally been beaten of arrogance , 18 – 46 she had never got thrashed more in her life. Rugby had been her lifeline, practically being her only joy in her unfifilling life, and now with the only thing you can enjoy being beaten at it, well let’s say it did not go well.

“ Help !” shouts of terror had been heard.

 “ I told you I want to win ! “ she demanded,

“ You shall know my wrath “ ! Maungarei exclaimed,

She soon spiraled out of control, she swung at anything that crossed her sight, turning the whole town upside down ! Her luck came to an end with the witch on the horizon.

” OWCH ! WHAT WAS THAT FOR ? ” the witch yelped

” OH SHUT UP STOP BEING A SOOK ! ” hissed Maungarei

” Says the person with anger issues… ” smirked the witch, Maungarei forced the poor old lady onto the ground, but a final push sent the witch into a fuming state of emotion. ” That’s it ! ” thundered the Witch ” I’ve tried to be nice and I think you might have sent you back to Papatuanuku, to think about your actions ! ”

” Ohhh, what are you going to do about it, that’s right you can’t do ja- “

Suddenly the clouds started to accumalate in the once blue sky , the witch had now begun to chant these unknown languages very loudly. The intensity of the moment had started to solidify, ” No more second chances, time to be reminded of what you are . Go to sleep and use this time wisely to reflect” declared the witch. Her existence fading, transforming into the thing that she had been called many, many times a studious volcano but on the very brink of her transformation she cried out,“ I will have the last say !”, now she sleeps with violence in her mind. Silence…

Well that is what we thought would happen , little did we know that all that anger, envy, and all sorts of bad things began to build up being fed to the mighty explosion that destroyed half of the town… This time she wasnt speaking from her mouth yet simply exploded with fury, quite literally.Being amidst all of this destruction, pain and chaos it was at that, that everything had clicked she used to wonder why it seemed that everyone became her opposition when really she was the one that switched teams. To top that all off she hadn’t been making it any better, only worse, grief struck first hitting straight to her heart, then pain, anxiety, depression lingered. The quakes of distress ceased to exist now she forever cries in spirit.

In the topic of Writing we had been learning on what a pourqoui story is and what it is all about, and what it is, is that a pourqoui story is a ‘why story’ where it explains how it happemed and why, but mor in a more child-friendy, fun way ! Interestingly enough is that the word ‘pourqoui’ itself in the french dictionary means ‘why’ therefore giving the title of why story to be a pourqoui . To show our knowledge of the why story we had been assigned to create a pourqoui story, about why Mount Maungarei sleeps, using the pourqoui framework our teacher had previously taught us how to use,and also with the helpful assit of Adobe Express that helped us paint a picure on what the situaton looked like, and to do his we used short prompts to describe what we wanted !

Volcano Animation

This week LS2 has been working on an Animation project using google slides!

The topic of our animation was about how a volcano erupts,

First , We got into groups of 4 or in pairs and create a google slides of an animation that show how a volcano eruptes and becomes dormant, we also had to use our smart searching skills to find out more about how it erupts,  It was really fun to create and something I found interesting was learning how to make the animation and making precise desions by working together as a group to make it all come together.

Volcano Infographic

For Inqiury we had been learning the 4 different types of volcanoes, while using our smart searching skills to find out more facts about the volcanoes; Cone, Caldera, Shield and Dome these are the four types. This is our infographic explaining what they are and how they are formed, and behind each type is a volcano that matches the 4 types of volcanoes. My group had done one each and I think working with them was fun and I enjoyed it.
